My most successful DéCoR post was when I compared design at Restoration Hardware with classic antiques we sell each and every month at Kaminski Auctions.

Our May 17th, Twentieth Century Modern Design and Fine Art sale is now on our website at www.kaminskiauctions.com. After reviewing the amazing pieces in the sale, I thought a similar post comparing what is in our May Modern sale, to the offerings from the company Design Within Reach was in order.

Design Within Reach is a company started in 1999 by a man named Rob Forbes who was just looking for simple, well-made furniture with classic lines to furnish his own apartment. He was enamored with the designs of many of the Scandinavian and Italian designers, whose work was only available by special order, and you had to wait months for delivery. Furniture designed by Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia were “out of reach” for most people. A true entrepreneur, he went out and bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and “waited for the phones to ring”.

At first phenomenally successful, Design Within Reach in July 2004, was valued at $211 million dollars. A downturn in the economy, over zealous expansion plans and lawsuits for design infringement ,brought the company to its knees. Herman Miller bought it in July of 2014 and a complete restructuring took place. With over 30 stores, which they refer to as  “studios”, it is still the number one resource for modern furniture today.

Perhaps the most recognizable pieces of Herman Miller furniture are the Charles and Ray Eames chair and ottoman. Depending on what leather you select the Design Within Reach price starts at $4130.15 and can go as high as $54015.15.

Your classic mahogany dining table, whether it be Regency or Sheraton style, is out of fashion… just now.  There was a time 15-20 years ago when these superbly crafted tables, many with intricate banded inlay around the edge or beautifully swirled inlay patterns in the wood, sold for $1000.00 or upwards a foot.  That is a ten foot mahogany table sells for a minimum of $10,000, a twelve foot started at $12,000 and so on.  Nowadays as mid century modern and just plain modern is the fashion, these wonderful old tables are a fantastic value at Kaminski Auctions.

Mahogany itself is a beautiful hardwood often used indoors and outside as well. It has amazing grain, gleaming color and adds warmth to any room it is used in.  Its natural color deepens as it ages and brings richness to your decor.  A saber legged mahogany table in any room, reads gracious dining takes place here.

Think out of the box and follow the trend of many well known decorators today that mix laid back with formal.  In your new all white modern kitchen, use a classic formal mahogany dining table and the contrast of old and new makes the new “white kitchen” so much more interesting.  For a more traditional look, pair it with a crystal chandelier or use a stark modern light fixture to really mix it up.

Adding white modern upholstered chairs to pair with the traditional dark wood tables creates some real glamor in the room!

One of the best uses of these gorgeous mahogany tables is this… A good friend of mine had her dining room table mirrored by a professional. This is such an inspirational idea and I love how she has updated the piece to fit inside her room. It is a twist on the traditional. The mirror adds an element of interest to the space (not to mention an instant conversation starter), illuminating and opening up the room just as it would if it were hanging on the wall. Everything on the table from the floral centerpiece, to the stemware, to the china, is reflected in this beautiful mirrored surface, making it so much more dramatic.

Because mahogany tables are such a classic piece, they can be easily incorporated into your existing décor–dressed up or down as you see fit–and you have the exciting opportunity to get creative with how you incorporate them into your home. Kaminski Auctions will offer several mahogany tables at an on-site auction in Gloucester, Massachusetts, September 22nd. Here are some examples of tables we offered in our July onsite auction in Nahant:
